Spider-Man 2099 3D Model (Maya)

A character modeling project built in Maya, starting from a simple cube and refined into a detailed figure with extrusions, symmetry, and added divisions. Textured with surface materials and custom UV maps (painted in Photoshop), the model emphasizes Spider-Man 2099’s bold silhouette and suit details while showcasing skills in topology, UV mapping, and texturing.

Concept & Research

I chose to model Spider-Man 2099 in Maya as a character modeling exercise. To begin, I gathered multiple reference images from different angles to capture the silhouette and proportions of the character.


Modeling Process

  • Torso & Shoulders: Adjusted vertices to refine shape and extruded shoulders. The wide, muscular build required extra detailing.

  • Arms & Legs: Extruded limbs, carefully shaping thighs, calves, and feet with added divisions for smoothness. Used imagination where references were limited.

  • Head & Mask: Modeled the head from a cube, refining the topology with more divisions.

  • Base Mesh: Started with a cube to block out the torso silhouette, using symmetry and additional divisions for accuracy.


Detailing & UV Mapping & Texturing

  • Muscular Definition: Adjusted body proportions to reflect Spider-Man’s athletic frame.

  • Materials: Applied standard surface materials and added red emissive textures to enhance suit details.

  • Hands: Modeled but challenging to pose naturally.


  • Challenge: The most difficult stage was UV unwrapping, especially the mask and spider logo.

  • Solution: Used automatic unwrap, then manually cut sections. Exported UV snapshots to Photoshop to paint details (mask features & spider logo) before reapplying in Maya.



Outcome & Reflection

The model captured the essence of Spider-Man 2099 with clean topology and strong proportions. If refined further, I would focus on muscle detail and mask accuracy. This project strengthened my skills in 3D modeling, UV mapping, and texture workflow.
